The IAG Careers Service helped Daryl move forwards
At HMP Sudbury, we put Daryl into work with the St Giles Trust as a Youth Worker, helping young people to make better decisions, and avoid prison.
Daryl accessed our IAG Careers Service as was able to use his lived experience of crime to support young people down a better path. Daryl told us he was "incredibly grateful for the support and can now see a future" for himself.

Lynne turned her life around after 18 months in custody
PeoplePlus at HMP Foston Hall gave Lynne the stepping stone she needed to be the better person she knew she could be.
She says: "My Future Skills course, Level 1 Maths, IT, and Leadership, plus all the hard work I had done in my first 11 months in custody, turned into something very valuable for my future career. I got a job in the prison as a Team Leader in Recycling and then I got my Level 1 in English and was asked to be a mentor, and during lockdown I worked in recycling and attained the WAMITAB Certificate.
Towards the end of my 18 months in custody, PeoplePlus was able to put me in touch with a company called New Leaf that supports people with convictions away from crime and into work. There was an opening available for me there, I was so thrilled and wanted to grab it with both hands. I left custody 16th July 2020 for the next chapter of my journey.
Once in the community, I was invited for an interview at New Leaf. I attended the training session and was offered a voluntary role with the company as a support worker helping ex-prisoners with all kinds of complex needs. I started my role on 17th August 2020 and haven't looked back. During Covid, I applied for the role of Resettlement Support Worker working at the Departure Lounge project with New Leaf. In February 2021 I was rewarded for all my hard work, with a paid role within the company.
At the end of September, I was given the title of Lead Resettlement Support Worker which I am so proud of. If it had not been for PeoplePlus and New Leaf I would not have been given the opportunity to fulfill my dream of helping people to change their lives."

At first, Damien found it extremely difficult to cope with the prospect of a long sentence in custody. He refused to participate in education or work, and ended up on constant watch due to his state of mind. When the Education Department resumed classroom delivery, we began to reach out to him and he initially agreed to participate in our Art Academy course, during which time he benefited from 1:1 tutor support. Later, he asked to participate in our L2 Food Safety course.
His tutor said: “Damien’s successes have been recognised as a big achievement by his peers and tutors here at HMP Leicester. He had not engaged with education for lots of reasons, so it was a surprise when he asked to come on the Level 2 food Safety Course. He was enthusiastic and fully prepared to engage in all learning activities, he entered into discussions with his peers and showed good reasoning skills when looking at various scenarios. He developed a good understanding of food safety. He took ownership of his barriers to education and used strategies to manage these effectively. He recognised his level of anxiety on the day of the exam and asked me how he could manage them. He has travelled a long way since we first tried to engage with him. He has become more confident and assured in his ability to be successful in education. I believe this has helped his self-esteem and made his future a little brighter”.
Damien has since enrolled on Functional Skills maths course, and is making rapid progress with the help of 1:1 tutorials.

Education in prison helps Sam to overcome his social anxiety
Sam joined North Sea Camp in July this year and was very apprehensive about attending the Education department due to his autism and social anxiety. Sam was very open with our Inclusion support coordinator (ISC) and worked closely with her to develop a strategy plan.
Following his induction and initial meeting with the ISC Sam enrolled onto the Independent Living course where he worked through the modules on a one-to-one basis with his tutor Nicky. It was evident that Sam’s confidence started to increase and he started attending Education on a more regular basis to have catch up with staff and generally just “check in”. Sam then asked if he could sit in on a group session, he knew this would be testing his boundaries but felt confident enough to do it. He did it and joined a small Art group and engaged in discussions and shared his views.
Following his success in the group session, Sam took the plunge and enrolled on the 1 day Introduction to Manual Handling course, IN A GROUP!! Sam attended this class without the ISC with him and stayed for the duration of the session, he interacted with his peers and joined in discussions contributing some very good points. Sam was excited to come back and share his achievement and was very pleased with his certificate.
He has now signed up to start on the Level 2 Health and Safety course.
